December Holidays

I hope this finds everyone safely back in their homes with electricity and warmth.

On Wednesday, December 17th we will have picture re-takes and our make-up for the book fair.

Room 6 has been busy learning about December holidays around the world. We have learned about Hanukkah and made latkes. They were delicious! We made crowns for St. Lucia and piƱatas for Los Posada. Today we started to weave paper mats (mkeka) for Kwanzaa. It’s been a frenzy of paper, paint and glitter in our room!
I have had a couple of requests for the cinnamon dough recipe we used for our gingerbread ornaments. Here is a link to the recipe: Cinnamon Dough Recipe
We made ours with cinnamon and applesauce. When I make these again, I will plan on adding the elmer's glue for more strength.

Holiday Shop

Our Holiday Shop will be on Tuesday at 9:00. Please make sure all money is labeled and sealed inside the envelope that went home today.

Gingerbread Week

We had a wonderful week reading many stories about the Gingerbread Man. Everyone voted on a different version as his or her favorite. The children did a fantastic job comparing and contrasting the stories.

These are the stories we read:
Monday- The Gingerbread Man by Karen Schmidt
Tuesday- The Gingerbread Man by Jim Aylesworth and Barbara McClintock
Wednesday-The Gingerbread Girl by Lisa Campbell Ernst
Thursday-The Gingerbread Cowboy by Janet Squires and Holly Berry
Friday- The Gingerbread Baby by Jan Brett
Gingerbread Friends by Jan Brett

Jan Brett has some wonderful coloring pages on her website for her Gingerbread stories.
Gingerbread Friends

Today we made cinnamon gingerbread ornaments and gingerbread play dough. Here is the recipe for the play dough:

3/4 C all purpose flour
1/2 C salt
1 1/2 t powdered alum or cream of tartar
1 1/2 t vegetable oil
1/2 C boiling water
brown paste food coloring ( we skipped this part)
1 1/2 t pumpkin pie spice
In a medium bowl add first 3 ingredients and mix. Then add water and oil; mix. Add spice and food coloring; mix. Then knead dough until smooth. Store in airtight container.
