January 26th-30th

Thank you to everyone who brought in cereal boxes! We received enough to make our special boxes.

This week we learned about animals in winter. We found out that animals hibernate, migrate or adapt. We have been working on an extra special book this week to show our new knowledge. The kids are very excited to finish these up and be able to show them off to their families.

We also learned our newest sight word “do” and had fun learning our new “do” song from Heidi’s Songs. Everyone did a super job reading their sight wordbooks this week to the teachers. Please let them share their fantastic reading skills with you at home and read their books, “In Winter”.

Next week we will finish up our animals in winter book and move into the arctic unit.

Have a super weekend!

Chinese New Year

Today we learned a little about Chinese New Year. We each learned what animal we were under the Chinese zodiac. Some of us were horses and some of us were rams. We made Chinese hats to celebrate the day.

We loved reading the story "Snowballs" by Lois Ehlert. It gave us great inspiration for our creations!

January 12th-16th

This week we worked on the letter H and the word “have”. We had a great time playing our letter card game to make teams to spell out the word “have”. We were very impressed at how well all the children were able to split themselves into teams to spell the word. YAY!

We enjoyed reading the book “Snowballs” by Lois Ehlert. Our snow family creations came out awesome! We will have them on our bulletin board in the hallway next week. We’ll also post some pictures online too.

Next week we will be focusing on positive behavior in the classroom. We will start using good behavior tickets to go into a Friday chance drawing. We will also be working on a classroom incentive to earn a popcorn party for good behavior.

A few January notes...

I want to thank everyone who has donated items to our classroom. It has been very appreciated!

I also want to remind parents during this cold weather to please remember hats and mittens. We don't play in the snow, so snowpants are not needed. (I know a few have come in with some, but they are very time consuming to put on at the end of the day)

Please continue to encourage your kids to sound out words at home. We have some fantastic writers in our room!

More updates to come later in the week!

Welcome Back!

Welcome back from the holidays and more snow!

Coming back in January brings us to a very exciting point in the school year. Now that our students are “Kindergarten Experts,” we are getting ready for 1st grade. The first new big change was the addition of the “Ask 3 friends” rule. Students must now ask 3 friends for help with tying shoes before they can ask a teacher.

We also introduced our “dictation” work on Tuesday. Several times a week, students will write down an assortment of letters given by the teacher. Students will first write these letters in uppercase form and then will go back and write the matching lowercase letters underneath. They will also write a sentence, given by the teacher, on the back of their papers. Sentences are created with our rainbow words, word families, color words and simple CVC words. We will start out very slowly and gradually work our way up to a quicker pace. This activity will work on listening skills, letter fluency, letter recognition and basic sentence structure.

Our winter journals will also see some changes. Students will copy the date into each journal page. They will also be given a sentence starter for each journal entry.

These are just a few of the new things that will help us get ready for new and exciting things ahead.
